Jesus began His public ministry announcing that He was preaching that the kingdom of heaven was at hand (Matthew 4:17). Is He saying it’s not far off in time and space? His first command to those with ears to hear is to “repent.”
What does this Biblical idea of Repentance require of me?
If you have accepted the divine gift of the love of the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10) beginning with the awareness that you must turn your loyalty to God (Romans 12:2), rather than the false idols that you have bowed to in your life – including your own self-centered willfulness – that process is actually turning around and changing your mind. The Bible calls it the gift of “repentance” (Acts 11:18) for non-Jewish people (called Gentiles) as well as the Jewish descendants of Abraham.
